I was running out of breath, it had been a while since I had been active enough to get my heart racing and keep going. Usually I would tap out and sit still, catch my breathe until I was ready to go again. This time was a little bit different, I started to remember the breathing techniques I’ve been practicing lately.
Deep inhale, slow exhale…. Let it ALL out.
Mindful meditations help with a WHOLE lot of things, including breathing through exercise. I begin looking up at the ceiling not that it would help me breathe better, but it surely helped me from watching the clock on the elliptical I was working out on. What’s so funny about this particular elliptical is, my husband and I named it, “The Horrible Machine,” that thing will wear you out very fast. Working your full body out at one time is not the easiest task, I realized that in order to get through the workout, I had to focus on my breathing. I had to coach myself into moving through my breathing, not focusing on the fact that I was tired but on the fact that once it’s over I can take a break and catch my breath. I focused on the fact that this is what the gym is for, this is what working out is for…. Building muscle, strength, stamina, health, and happiness from all your dedicated hard work on your body. Relating it to life is almost taboo like right???
In a split second I smiled as I huffed and puffed to keep myself focused and conquer this horrible machine. For just a moment I could understand the pressures of life, we treat life like the gym in some cases. Life is beautiful and bliss, one moment we’re running around enjoying all the great things that we have worked for and the great things that have just been given to us. We push through and embrace those moments, because they feel good. But when the bad times roll in and it’s certain that we all have good and bad times, we have some how adopted this natural habit to just give up because the weights are to heavy. Because we ran out of breath, we fall short of our goal because the weights were light at first but then with repetition it began to get heavier than we anticipated they would be. Some of us stop and look for help, we ask for help so we are more than able to push through the workout, we conquer it and move on to the next level of weights, a new routine to target, different stubborn areas of our body. But then there are those of us who just say, “Welp! I felt a burn today I could feel my muscles tighten up so I’ve done my workout for today, I’ll be back tomorrow,” only to perform the same routine that will not level you up in the weights, tightening and toning, building, or firming, losing weight, or being able to pick up heavier things than you are use to. You get on the scale, and you put on those “weight goal clothes” and things just don’t seem to be adding up. Uh Oh, Here comes the complaining and being upset because you can’t figure out why you aren’t gaining the desired muscle and losing the desired amount of weight and inches… For SOME Reason, You Just CANNOT Seem To Reach Your Goal… Hmmmmmm??? What Am I doing wrong? I eat healthy, I get a good night’s sleep, I’m not stressing AS much, I’m doing everything I’m supposed to be doing… EVERYTHING, I planned on doing, everything I said I was going to do, but I’m just not losing weight, or gaining muscle.
Womp, Womp, Womp……
Tighten up soldier and get it together….
You absolutely cannot believe that just because you put in a little time and effort that things will go as planned. YOU HAVE TO WORK! You cannot give up just because the workout is actually working. You cannot give up because you feel like the “amount” of work you have put in doesn’t SEEM to be paying off. Life is the same way you have to push through that pain and instead of thinking about the pain at the moment, think about how much better you will be once you make it through. With every set of weights you level up on, your body is healthier and sexier than before. You are stronger than before, you believe in yourself more and guess what… you feel good, like really good. Take a moment to breathe through your workouts in life, REST, catch your breath while your jogging… How right? STOP focusing on jogging and focus on breathing, control the inhale and exhale you are allowing to flow in and out of your body. Control the people, places, and things you allow to come in and out of yourr life, the people, places, and things you allow to stay in your life. Your troubles will seem so far away when you take hold of the weights you NEED to lift. Coach yourself into knowing that you will make it to the finish line, you will make it to your goal.
I was thinking about my weights in life last night, and as I sat there and I thought about the things I’ve accomplished, the things I’m currently facing, the things that just seem so heavy, to heavy for me to lift… I stopped for thinking and I took a deep breath and exhaled. That one little thing known as a deep breath or breathing, that we tend to forget works, it actually helped me understand that life can be a little confusing and sometimes you just do not know how to position yourself to pick up those weights and actually LIFT them. But with every breath you are mindful enough to use, I can promise you that your brain, and your body will work together so you are able to figure out exactly what you need to do to see your way through. I’m used to seeing the obstacles ahead of time, I learned along my way in life to pay attention to what I am doing and what I want do. I learned to decipher what is good and what isn’t good. Sometimes I find myself looking at all the obstacles and mazes that are before me, and I just can’t seem to figure out how to get through it.
- Remember why you chose to take this step in the first place
- Position yourself
- Prepare yourself for what you want to accomplish, not what you fear may happen.
- Do you have all the things you need to make this weight lift happen …
- Do you need gloves for a better grip on things?
- Do you need a weight lifting belt so you don’t strain your back?
- Is your position and posture ready for this lift?
- Have you planted your feet firm and balanced?
- Do you need a squatter to be there for your aid if and when necessary?
- Do you know what your goal is?
- How many repetitions will you do and you plan on doing before you level up?
What happens if you do things as planned and you don’t meet your highest expectations? Well guess what, whether you care to admit it or not you learned something, you figured out some things, and you can see where you need to do better. The whole reason we arrive to these moments in working out and in life is because we KNEW there was something that wasn’t right, something we wanted to change within ourselves and on the outside. Something that needs to be changed …
So dare you to ask yourself, “Did you come this far to give up?” Did you take all that time planning and preparing, envisioning yourself meeting your goal, only to get started and give up. To get half way there and say it isn’t working so I quit because I don’t know what else to do? To be more than half way accomplished and say Meh, *shrugs* I’m tired I need a break (that lasts longer than breaks should). To say I didn’t meet my goal but I accomplished a little so I didn’t fail… But in all honesty where does that leave you? What did it do for you, your goals, your confidence, your happiness, your dreams and desires, the amount of love you have for yourself to get better, do better, and actually be better….
DID YOU GIVE YOURSELF ALL YOU HAVE TO OFFER, ALL YOU ARE CAPABLE OF GIVING TO YOURSELF?
If you cannot honestly answer that question with a confident yes, then you my friend need to go back to the gym you pay for monthly to work out at, and either cancel your membership or hit the weights A LOT HARDER. You pay to live in your home, you pay to have your vehicle, you pay to eat, to bathe, to stay warm, you pay to live so why not give yourself your best effort? Yes those weights are heavy, the troubles that life throws at you are heavy excuse my french … But dammit stop punking out on yourself. Why is it so hard to take that moment to mope, cry, complain, sleep it off, and get up ready to defeat the struggle and pain?…. Why is it so hard for you to WANT to be stronger than you are now? Normally I give an uplifting quote from my stash, I end with some words of encouragement to help you face that part of yourself you are hiding from yourself and the world… But this time it’s ALL up to YOU! I can only do, give, and provide as much as I am capable of giving before I say enough is enough….
Get yourself and your thoughts together, GROW, Be STRONGER than you were before, that is if you truly want too… Otherwise Shut Up, no one needs your pile dumped off on them. People have their own things to deal with versus worrying and pushing those who have bolted themselves down in one spot like picnic tables.
